Keurig Dr Pepper beat the quarter, but its coffee half now sets the price

Q3 cleared consensus on sales and earnings, yet the stock gave back about 5% on the day because the beat leaned on a $99 million tariff refund and the legacy EPS outlook was trimmed on softer single-serve coffee. With 99% of daily variance company-specific and its Volatility state at a one-year high, the stock trades on its own story over the next 10–30 days — and that story has just turned from refreshment momentum to coffee-demand doubt.

Key risk (next 10–30 days)Post-print de-rating as analysts trim coffee estimates: the beat of $0.04 is roughly matched by the ~$0.06 per share the $99M tariff refund addede, and legacy EPS growth was cut to 3–5% from 4–6%.Bearish

Signal reflects the 10–30 day window only (13 Nov – 3 Dec 2026). Row tint matches the badge. e = derived by the desk, see colophon.

Keurig Dr Pepper came into the print at its 52-week high and level with the average analyst target. The quarter was good in cold beverages and adequate overall, but the one piece of new information — single-serve coffee is losing to cheaper formats and the legacy EPS range moves down a point — is exactly the part of the business that will become Global Coffee Co. For the next month that is what the stock trades.

01

Investment thesis

Each case states what would have to happen inside the next 10–30 days for it to play out. This section argues; the verdict is section 02.

Bull case
Refreshment momentum is real and accelerating. US Refreshment Beverages grew 10.9% in Q3 on 7.2% volume/mix, the third straight double-digit quarter (Q1 +11.9%, Q2 +10.0%). A dip that buys this engine at 16× forward earnings is the cheapest way into it.
The quarter beat on every headline line. Revenue $7.34B vs $7.33B consensus, adjusted EPS $0.66 vs $0.62, GAAP EPS $0.59 vs ~$0.57, and the full-year outlook was reaffirmed — the fourth consecutive adjusted EPS beat.
Cash and deleveraging are on plan. Q3 free cash flow $1.01B and nine-month FCF $1.91B (double last year's $955M); pro-forma leverage improved to 4.1× from the mid-year level, helped by $925M of Chobani proceeds.
A 5% drop resets the valuation gap. At ~$35 the stock is ~15.3× 2026E vs KO at 26.9×; the median target of $38 is again ~9% away, enough to draw value buyers within the month.
Holiday brewer season can flip the coffee read. Black Friday (27 Nov) is the peak window for Keurig brewer sales; Q3 coffee volume/mix was +6.9%, so a strong holiday channel read would undercut the "single-serve in decline" narrative inside the window.
Neutral case
The print is digested and the stock ranges. With no scheduled catalyst between 13 Nov and 3 Dec, the most likely path is a $33.50–36.50 range as estimates move a few cents and the separation timetable stays "early 2027".
Targets barely move. Most of the seven October target changes sit at $37–39; a reaffirmed full-year guide gives brokers little reason to cut more than $1, leaving consensus near $36.
Staples rotation holds but stalls. KDP rose with KO, PEP and MNST (+11–12% each over 30 days) while the S&P 500 ETF fell 2.3%; if that rotation neither extends nor reverses, KDP's idiosyncratic noise dominates.
Regime suggests width, not direction. Volatility is at the trailing-year high while Persistency is near zero — a configuration that historically widened ranges without a reliable drift.
Dividend support. The $0.23 quarterly dividend (~2.6% yield at $35) anchors income holders through the window.
Bear case
The beat was bought with a one-off. Q3 operating income included a $99M tariff refund; after tax that is roughly $0.056 a sharee — more than the $0.04 adjusted EPS beat. Underlying earnings were in line, not ahead.
Legacy guidance moved down. Legacy constant-currency EPS growth was cut to 3–5% from 4–6% on US Coffee; the reaffirmed total relies on JDE Peet's contributing 7–8 points. Estimate revisions land in the window.
Coffee consumers are trading down. Management said value formats, private label, ground and instant coffee are outperforming single-serve among lower- and middle-income buyers and took a more cautious Q4 view on US Coffee.
Margins are compressing. Adjusted operating margin fell to 22.7% from 25.3%, GAAP gross margin to 48.0% from 54.3%, and unallocated corporate costs rose to $253M from $197M as separation costs build.
History after Volatile Trend entries is poor. Of KDP's eight entries into Volatile Trend since Sep 2025, the following 10 sessions were negative six times, with a median of −4.35% — the stock tends to give back these spikes.
Leverage leaves no room. 4.1× pro-forma leverage with $7.27B of short-term borrowings and current maturities makes any coffee shortfall a credit question as well as an earnings one.
Beverages earned the rally; coffee just reopened the question — and coffee is what changed on 3 Nov.
02

Composite assessment

The finding: over the next 10–30 days KDP trades its US Coffee story, not the market — with 99% of its variance company-specific and Volatility at a one-year high, the bear case's post-print de-rating has the edge, and only a firm separation milestone or a strong holiday brewer read would hand it back to the bulls.

2.2 — Where it wins and where it loses

Wins
Cold-beverage engine. US Refreshment Beverages net sales $3.03B, +10.9%, with adjusted operating margin 29.1%.
Cash generation. Nine-month free cash flow $1.91B vs $955M a year earlier.
JDE Peet's profitability. $2.65B sales at an 18.1% adjusted operating margin, ahead of the company's own expectations for a second quarter running.
Relative valuation. 16.1× 2026E EPS vs 26.9× for KO and 36.4× for MNST on forward earnings.
Loses
US Coffee pricing. Net price −4.2% in Q3; operating growth came from the tariff refund and synergies.
Leverage. 4.1× pro-forma, $28.9B of debt on the balance sheet vs $16.1B at 31 Dec 2025.
Margin mix. Adjusted operating margin 22.7% vs 25.3%; GAAP gross margin 48.0% vs 54.3%.
Price vs targets. The 2 Nov close of $36.82 was 1.2% above the $36.38 consensus target.
03

Risk factors

Ordered by what can bite inside the next 10–30 days, not by ultimate severity. Structural risks that cannot resolve inside the window are marked as context.

Live in the window
Post-print estimate cuts. Brokers will rebase US Coffee for Q4 and 2027 in the days after 3 Nov. With the legacy EPS range cut to 3–5% and the stock at consensus target, even small target trims remove the valuation floor that supported the October rally.
Quality-of-beat debate. The $99M tariff refund (≈$0.056/share after taxe) exceeds the $0.04 beat. If the market re-anchors on underlying in-line earnings, the 21% 30-day run has no fundamental surprise behind it.
Momentum unwind in a high-volatility state. Volatility reads +0.455, the trailing-year maximum, and past entries into Volatile Trend were followed by negative 10-day returns six times out of eight (median −4.35%). A first −5% day can extend.
Staples rotation reversal. The October rise came with KO, PEP and MNST while the broad market fell. Any reversal of that defensive bid would remove the tailwind just as company news turned.
Structural context
Separation execution. The split into Beverage Co. and Global Coffee Co. is targeted for early 2027 "subject to market conditions". Timing slippage is a real risk but would only surface in filings or the Q4 call (late February), outside the window.
Single-serve structural share loss. Price-sensitive buyers moving to ground, instant and private-label coffee is a multi-quarter trend; one month cannot prove or disprove it.
Capital-structure layering. $4.5B convertible preferred (~8% share of earnings), a $4.2B non-controlling interest in the pod JV and $24.8B of senior notes dilute common-holder economics over years, not weeks.
Green-coffee and tariff exposure. Coffee input costs and trade policy drive Global Coffee Co. margins; the refund that helped Q3 is not recurring.

The risks that can bite this month are about expectations, not solvency: a beat that was mostly a refund, a guide that moved down a notch, and a stock that had already run to its target. None of them threatens the business, but together they argue that the first post-print move is not obviously finished.

The next print is four months away, so inside the window the guidance itself does the work. Reaffirming the total while shifting its composition — less from legacy coffee, more from JDE Peet's — is a neutral headline with a negative mix, and the market priced it that way on the day.

On adjusted earnings KDP is cheaper than every peer but PepsiCo, and that discount is what the October rally was closing. The discount exists for reasons that just got more visible — 4.1× leverage, a structurally lower-margin coffee mix and a two-step separation — so fundamentals cap the downside near $32–33 (the September base) without supplying a reason to rerate inside the month.

252 daily observations, 3 Nov 2025 – 2 Nov 2026 (trailing-year commentary window). As of 2 Nov 2026 — 1 trading day behind the report date, and before the 3 Nov post-print move.

KDP — Regime trace · Persistency vs Volatility (290 daily points, oldest faint → newest bright)

Persistency on x, Volatility on y, oldest faint to newest bright. Q1 volatile trend, Q2 volatile chop, Q3 quiet range, Q4 quiet drift. Mean, std dev, min, max and percentile cover the trailing year — 3 Nov 2025 to 2 Nov 2026, 252 observations. Current is the latest reading (2 Nov 2026). Currently in Q1 Volatile Trend, held 4 consecutive periods. Persistency sits within 0.05 of the axis, so the quadrant call is provisional: Volatile Trend versus Volatile Chop is on the boundary. Correlations, exponents and betas are never coloured — only signed values with valence are.

Occupancy and transitions cover the trailing year — 3 Nov 2025 to 2 Nov 2026, 252 observations (364 days). The trace above spans the full series from 10 Sep 2025; these figures do not. KDP has oscillated almost exclusively between Volatile trend and Quiet drift: six round trips in a year, so a Q1 episode has typically resolved back into Q4 rather than into chop. Separately, of eight entries into Volatile trend since Sep 2025, the next 10 sessions were negative six times (median −4.35%).

Persistency moves slowly.

The series updates far less often than Volatility and can hold one value for weeks, producing long vertical runs on the trace. That is the data behaving normally. These statistics describe the stated window and are not predictions.

Market Driver 1 (primary)0.000070.078≈ 53%e
Sector Driver 1 (primary)−0.03692−0.074≈ 47%e

Explained-variance shares split the 1.1% R² by squared standardised betas (e). Raw betas are per unit of differenced driver level and are not comparable across drivers.

KDP is neither a beta vehicle nor a sector proxy: two years of daily returns show almost no covariation with the primary Market or Sector Drivers. The October rally looked like a staples rotation, but the drivers say it moved on its own news — so over the next 10–30 days the company decides the month, and an index hedge would not have offset either the rally or the 3 Nov drop.

11.3 — Rolling 60-day driver correlation

Market Driver 1 (solid) and Sector Driver 1 (dashed) against KDP's daily returns, 60-day window. The final points on the chart, recomputed on every session to 2 Nov 2026, read 0.085 for Market Driver 1 and −0.064 for Sector Driver 1, against full-period values of 0.072 and −0.067 (the table above uses the script's sampled series, 0.071 and −0.067). The Market correlation peaked at 0.433 and has since collapsed back towards zero — no stable systematic link has held for more than a few months.

Performance by market regime

Every group is named, never its proxy. Conditional statistics describe the stated window and are not forecasts. Unlike section 10, these tables use the full available history of KDP returns overlapping the market-regime series — 499 trading days, 5 Nov 2024 to 2 Nov 2026 — because a single year split across four quadrants per group leaves nearly every bucket below the thin-sample threshold.

All 14 mapped groups, full history (499 days). Rows are greyed as thin sample where the best or current bucket rests on fewer than 30 days: Energy's best regime has 10 days and Bonds long's current bucket has 15. Their Sharpe spreads are excluded from the sensitivity read below. Days in current = consecutive sessions to 2 Nov 2026.

12.3 — Sensitivity callouts

Most sensitive to the Global market regime (Sharpe spread 8.32, ignoring thin-sample Energy). Global market has been in Quiet drift for 37 sessions — historically KDP's strongest bucket (Sharpe 7.81) — but on only 36 days of history, so the reading is suggestive rather than reliable.
What has followed US market Quiet drift over 10–30 days. Across 128 days with the US market in Quiet drift, KDP's next-21-session return averaged −1.5% (median +0.7%, positive 54.7% of the time), versus +3.1% average and 71.6% positive when the US market was in Volatile trend. History, not forecast — and the spread of outcomes is wide.
Broad-market configuration is mildly unfavourable. US market and SP500 are both in Quiet drift (43 sessions), KDP's weakest or near-weakest bucket for those groups (Sharpe −0.16 and −0.56). Combined with the 1.1% systematic share in section 11, the market neither helps nor reliably hurts.
Rates are the regime to watch. Bonds mid sits in Volatile trend (Sharpe 0.64 for KDP) with a 7.57 spread; KDP has done far better when intermediate bonds drift quietly (Sharpe 5.18). A levered staple is sensitive to rate volatility.
Do not trade this table.

Regime-conditional history describes 5 Nov 2024 – 2 Nov 2026, not the future. Rows marked thin sample hold fewer than 30 days in a decisive bucket and their annualised figures should not be relied on. Market regime series as of 2 Nov 2026 — 1 trading day behind the report date.

Overall view · next 10–30 days
Mixed · leaning cautious

The evidence favours the bear case at the margin: KDP arrived at the print fully priced, the beat was matched by a one-off refund, and the only new fundamental information — weaker single-serve coffee and a lower legacy EPS range — feeds directly into estimate cuts that land inside the window, while a company-specific stock in its highest Volatility state of the year has historically given back such spikes. The view flips if holiday brewer demand reads strong over 26–30 Nov or the company sets a firm separation date, either of which would refocus the stock on its 16× multiple and double-digit refreshment growth.
