Fastenal's 15.5% growth quarter met a stock already priced above its targets, so the month turns on whether October daily sales keep accelerating

Q3 2026 sales rose 15.5% to $2.46B and EPS of $0.35 beat $0.34, with operating margin up to 21.5%. But gross margin slipped 40 bps to 44.8%, 2026 capex was set at $310–330M (from $231M in 2025), and the shares fell about 4.5% pre-market to ~$49, from near a 52-week high. At 41× trailing earnings and above the $49.45 consensus target, FAST is fully valued. Over the next 10–30 days the stock trades in a quiet, range-bound regime that has historically been followed by gains; the October sales report in early November decides whether the dip is bought.

Key risk (next 10–30 days)The post-print sell-off extends. After the last four prints the shares fell on the day (−7.5%, −2.6%, −6.9%, −2.8%); twice they kept falling over the next 21 sessions. A soft October daily-sales figure (~5 Nov) or a weak ISM reading would hit a stock priced at 37× forward earnings.Bearish
Catalysts in windowEx-dividend 28 Oct. Wesco, Applied Industrial and Grainger Q3 (late Oct – early Nov), ISM manufacturing (2 Nov), FOMC 27–28 Oct and Fastenal's October sales report (~5 Nov), all expected. The 10-Q (~late Oct). The next quarterly report (~mid Jan) is outside.Mixed
Overall view (10–30 days)Mixed. Solid quarter, full price. Growth is accelerating, margins expanded and the balance sheet is pristine. But the stock trades at a large premium to peers and above its consensus target, gross margin slipped and capex is rising, so the market sold the print. The quiet regime has historically been followed by gains, which argues against a deep slide. Composite 7.4 / 10. Mixed

Signal reflects the 10–30 day window only (24 Oct – 13 Nov 2026). Row tint matches the badge. Regime and driver readings as of 13 Oct 2026, 1 trading day behind the report date; market regimes as of 12 Oct 2026, 2 trading days behind. The Q3 release came before the 14 Oct open; the regular-session reaction is not yet in the price data. DSR = daily sales rate.

Fastenal did what a quality compounder is paid to do: it grew faster, widened its operating margin and converted earnings to cash. The trouble is the price, which already sat above the analysts' targets. The pre-market drop resets some of that premium; the October sales number decides whether investors step back in.

01

Investment Thesis

Each case states what would have to happen inside the next 10–30 days for it to play out. This section argues; the verdict is in section 02.

Bull case
Growth keeps accelerating. Sales growth rose from +8.6% in Q2 2025 to +15.5% in Q3 2026, accelerating in five of the last six quarters, led by heavy manufacturing (+20.2%).
Operating leverage is working. Operating income +20.2% on +15.5% sales; operating margin 21.5%, the best in the peer group (Grainger 16.1%, Applied Industrial 11.8%).
Large-account momentum. Sites spending $50k+ a month rose 19% to 3,288, and contract sales grew 18.8% to 76.5% of the mix.
Post-print dips have been bought. After the January and July 2026 prints the stock fell 2.6–2.8% on the day, then rose 8.4% and 14.2% over the next 21 sessions.
A supportive own regime. Since August 2025, 21-day forward returns from Quiet Range have had a median of +6.2%, positive 86% of the time.
What must happen in the window: October daily sales grow 14%+ (~5 Nov), ISM holds above 50, and FAST recovers $51.
Neutral case
In line, not a beat. EPS beat by a cent; revenue by ~0.9%. That is a typical Fastenal quarter, not a surprise.
The stock already sits on its targets. The $49.45 consensus mean and $49 median are close to the ~$49 pre-market level, so there is little target-implied drift either way.
Low volatility. 30-day realised volatility is 17.1%. A ±1 standard-deviation move over 21 sessions is about ±$2.5, so $47–52 is the natural band.
Mixed market regimes. The US market's Quiet Drift is FAST's weakest US regime (Sharpe 0.10), though the spread is small (1.14).
What must happen in the window: October sales grow ~14–15%, peers report steady demand, and FAST trades $47–52.
Bear case
The market keeps selling the prints. Four consecutive negative day-one reactions; after the October 2025 and April 2026 prints the stock fell a further 2.5% and 5.4% over 21 sessions.
Gross margin is drifting. 44.8% against 45.3% a year ago; price/cost remains a ~30 bp drag and tariff timing helped by ~20 bps, which may not repeat.
Heavier spending. 2026 net capex of $310–330M is up ~40% on 2025's $231M, and the FMI signing goal was trimmed by 1,000 MEUs.
Rich multiple. 36.7× forward earnings against 24.6× for peers and 26.0× for Grainger. Any growth wobble meets a valuation with little support.
Working capital. Receivables up 30% since December to $1.62B, faster than sales; customer-site count fell to 90,759 from 98,823.
What must happen in the window: October sales slow toward 12%, ISM slips below 50, and FAST breaks $47.
Fastenal delivered a textbook quarter. The market had priced a textbook quarter and a bit more, and the bit more is what it is taking back.
02

Composite Assessment

The finding: over the next 10–30 days Fastenal's ~4.5% post-print drop takes out the premium above its targets, so the October daily-sales report (~5 Nov) decides the month. Growth of 14%+ supports a recovery to $51–52; a slowdown toward 12% or a sub-50 ISM sends it below $47.

03

Risk Factors

Ordered by what can bite inside the next 10–30 days, not by ultimate severity. Structural risks that cannot resolve inside the window are marked as context.

Live in the window
October daily sales (~5 Nov). Fastenal reports monthly sales. After a +15.5% quarter, anything below ~13% for October would be read as a peak in growth and would hit the multiple directly.
Post-print drift. The last four prints fell on the day; after two of them the stock kept falling (−2.5% and −5.4% over 21 sessions). A −4.5% open can extend if the sell-side trims targets.
Industrial macro. ISM manufacturing (2 Nov) and the FOMC (27–28 Oct). Manufacturing is the majority of sales; a contraction signal would hit the fastest-growing end market.
Peer read-across. Grainger, Wesco, Applied Industrial and MSC report or update in the window; correlations with Grainger (0.55) and Applied (0.51) are moderate.
Tariff and price/cost. Price/cost is still a ~30 bp gross-margin drag; a change in tariff policy or refunds could swing Q4 margin.
Structural context
Industrial cycle. Daily sales track US manufacturing activity; a downturn would reverse the current acceleration over several quarters.
Capex and productivity. The hub and automation spending must deliver efficiency to protect margins as growth normalises.
Valuation de-rating. A 37× forward multiple assumes years of double-digit growth.
Large-account concentration. The shift to $50k+ sites raises exposure to a smaller number of big manufacturers.

Fastenal's balance sheet and business carry little risk inside a month. The live risk is a growth-rate disappointment landing on a premium multiple, and the first test is the October sales report at the end of the window.

Over the window, 21-day forward returns from Quiet Range had a median of +6.2% (86% positive, 36 observations); from Quiet Drift +1.4% (58%); from Volatile Chop −0.3% (48%); and from Volatile Trend −2.6% (25%). Unconditionally the median was +0.1% (50% positive). The print is likely to move FAST into Volatile Chop, historically a flat state. As of 13 Oct 2026.

Persistency moves slowly.

The series updates far less often than Volatility and can hold one value for weeks, producing long vertical runs on the trace. That is the data behaving normally. Negative Persistency means recent moves have tended to reverse. For the next 10–30 days that favours a partial retracement of the post-print drop rather than an extended slide, though the print itself may lift Volatility out of the quiet range. These statistics describe 20 Aug 2025 – 13 Oct 2026 and are not predictions.

All 14 mapped groups. Groups in bold have Sharpe spreads above 1.5, meaning FAST is materially sensitive to that group's regime. Sharpe spread is best-regime Sharpe minus worst-regime Sharpe. Market regimes as of 12 Oct 2026, 2 trading days behind.

12.3 — Sensitivity callouts

Most sensitive to the Bonds mid regime (Sharpe spread 3.48). FAST's Sharpe has been 3.16 when intermediate bonds were in Volatile Chop and −0.32 in Volatile Trend, the current state and its worst for that group.
What has historically followed the current US market regime over 10–30 days. In the 280 days the US market was in Quiet Drift with a full 21-day window, FAST's 21-day forward return had a median of +1.3% and was positive 57.9% of the time. Unconditionally, the median was +1.6% and positive 59.1% of the time. Quiet Drift is FAST's weakest US-market regime (Sharpe 0.10), but the spread is small (1.14). This is history, not a forecast.
A mixed configuration. Eleven of 14 groups sit in a regime with a positive FAST Sharpe, and three in its best: Technology Quiet Range (1.26), Financials Volatile Trend (1.08) and Bonds long Volatile Chop (1.08). But five sit in FAST's worst: US market, Global market, Bonds mid, VIX Mid and VIX Near.
Spreads are mostly small. Apart from Bonds mid (3.48), Utilities (2.88), Global market (2.58) and Gold (2.01), FAST's Sharpe spreads are under 2. The market-regime map matters less for FAST than for higher-beta names.
Do not trade this table.

Regime-conditional history describes 8 Feb 2022 – 12 Oct 2026, not the future. No regime bucket here holds fewer than 30 days. Where one does, annualised figures should not be relied on. Overlapping forward windows overstate the independence of observations. Market regime series as of 12 Oct 2026, 2 trading days behind the report date.

The 14 October print showed sales up 15.5%, operating margin up to 21.5% and cash conversion above 100%, from a business with net cash and the best margins among industrial distributors. It also showed gross margin down 40 bps, capex stepping up ~40% and a trimmed device goal, and the shares fell about 4.5% pre-market from near a 52-week high and above the consensus target. FAST's quiet, mean-reverting regime has historically been followed by gains, which argues against a deep slide, but the premium valuation leaves no room for a growth stumble. The view turns bullish if October daily sales grow 14% or more (~5 Nov) and FAST recovers $51. It turns bearish if growth slows toward 12% or ISM falls below 50 and FAST breaks $47.
